5 Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke

If your elderly loved one has a stroke, recognizing the symptoms can make sure he or she receives immediate medical attention, which drastically reduces its cognitive and physical side effects. The post-stroke care experts at Home Care Assistance in Redondo Beach offer five basic signs and symptoms to help you identify a stroke:

1. Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body

If your loved one experiences the sudden onset of numbness in the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body, he or she may be having a stroke. Dropping items or the inability to lift light objects may be the result of this symptom.

2. Loss of vision or sudden vision problems

A lesser-known symptom of stroke is a problem with an individual’s vision. The onset of a stroke is often accompanied by either a complete loss or dimming of vision, especially if it’s in just one eye.

3. Changes in coordination or balance

Another common stroke symptom is the sudden lack of coordination or balance, particularly when localized to one side of the body. The majority of stroke survivors report experiencing jerky and unsteady movements that they could not control.

4. Headache

Particularly among women, a severe headache that occurs very rapidly and suddenly is frequently a symptom of stroke. Individuals who have a history of migraines are also more likely to have this symptom.

5. Vomiting and nausea

Although it is unusual, vomiting and nausea may be a symptom of stroke. If present, vomiting and nausea likely indicate a rare cerebellar stroke, or a stroke in the rear of the brain, that accounts for roughly 1.5 percent of all strokes.
