Hazards Around the Home That Can Lead to a Senior’s Injury

Regardless of how well you prepare a senior’s home for home care in Redondo Beach, there are many hazards you may accidentally overlook. These hazards could lead to minor and serious injuries for your senior loved one. Luckily, many of these potential issues can be fixed.

Bathroom Hazards

Many accidents and injuries seniors experience take place in the bathroom. The tub and shower are often slippery, which can lead to a fall and result in broken bones. To prevent this issue, place nonslip rubber mats or self-adhesive strips in the tub or shower. Grab bars should also be installed inside the shower and next to the toilet to help your loved one avoid falls.

Inadequate Lighting

Poor lighting inside and outside the home can be a health hazard for your loved one. You will need to make sure every room and entrance in the home has enough lighting so he or she can move around without risk of injury. To achieve this, you will need to use high wattage light bulbs and place nightlights in different rooms around the home. Be sure light switches are installed at the top and bottom of the stairs, along with an easy-to-reach lamp in your loved one’s bedroom.

Clutter and Items on the Floor

There may be items lying out around your home that can lead to your loved one becoming injured. For instance, lamp, extension, or telephone cords can cause a senior to slip and fall. To prevent an injury, you will need to tape or coil these cords next to the wall. Other hazards that may be scattered around the floors within your home include:

• Cluttered furniture – move items so there is a clear path

• Throw rugs – remove them or use nonslip backing to keep them in place

• Magazines, books, boxes, and other objects – be sure to keep these off the floor

Kitchen Hazards

The kitchen possesses many dangers that can lead to a senior’s injury. To avoid accidental cuts, knives, forks, and other sharp objects should be locked away securely in a place your loved one does not have access to. Be sure to keep appliances and items your loved one uses on a regular basis within his or her reach. This can prevent him or her from using other dangerous methods to reach the items such as climbing on the cabinets or step stools.
